The Jewish Community's Response to Converts
Global History & Culture, Identity & Responsibility
- Friday 10:40PM–11:55PM Congressional Room 2
We will explore how the Jewish community has responded to converts both historically and in the present day. We will discuss the struggles converts face integrating themselves into the community and explore how the community can provide a more supportive environment. Using a variety of texts, we will explore some of the challenges converts face as they navigate between the old and the new. We will also discuss how converts are changing the face of the Jewish community and what they add to our synagogues.
Racism in the Jewish Community
Inside/Out; Outside/In
Global History & Culture, Identity & Responsibility
- Monday 9:45AM–11:00AM Cousin Brucie
We will explore racism in the Jewish community on both the personal and the community level. We will discuss stereotypes, anti-Semitism, relations with non-Jews, and people of other races. We will also explore issues that Jews of color encounter in the community. We will look at how culture influences self-perception and how cultural perceptions affect others. We will use both Jewish sources and anecdotal statements from popular publications.
