A native of Ukraine, Cantor Natasha J. Hirschhorn is an accomplished performer and recording artist, featured on numerous CD’s as singer, pianist, arranger and composer; her first solo album of original music “They Call Me”, 9 Meditations on Hebrew Prayers was released in 2003. Music Director of Congregation Ansche Chesed in Manhattan, Natasha also conducts two Jewish community choruses and teaches at the Academy for Jewish Religion and the Jewish Theological Seminary.

An outstanding Soviet Jewish folklorist, Moshe Beregovsky (1892–1961) devoted his entire life to collecting Yiddish songs, niggunim (melodies), and klezmer tunes, most of which remained unpublished for almost 70 years. Now you can learn and sing some gems from this unique collection that has survived against all odds and was recently—finally—published in Moscow.

With “Shalom Aleichem,” niggunim (wordless melodies), and Kiddush, we welcome the Sabbath angels and each other to Shabbat at Limmud NY. As we all gather together for the first time at Limmud NY 2009, we celebrate the blessings of being one giant family and community. Enjoy this inspiring introduction before heading to the Shabbat dinner table. (Note: no amplification or musical instruments will be used during this session.)

Welcome to a traditional egalitarian Shabbat morning davening in a warm, intimate and participatory style. Hassidic niggunim are mixed with the beauty and depth of the nusach, impossible-not-to-join congregational melodies and quiet spaces for private davenning and meditation, along with a Haftarah chanted in a special Russian melody. (This service will have mixed gender seating and a full Torah reading).
