Beyond the Chuppah
New Discourse on Intermarriage
Identity & Responsibility
- Friday 1:30PM–2:45PM Congressional Room 2
Jewish identity is in flux among American Jews, and accepted wisdom asserts that the root of the problem is intermarriage, and that marriages between Jews and non-Jews will have fundamentally different trajectories than those between two Jews. This session will present and use systematic data to reframe discourse about intermarriage—to move toward a more textured and life-course understanding of the full array of factors that impact Jewish engagement.

Where Does It Take Alumni?
College/University Student Recommended, Identity & Responsibility, Israel
- Saturday 4:30PM–5:45PM Cousin Brucie
More than 150,000 young adults from North America have participated in Birthright Israel. Evaluation studies make clear that the program has a strong impact on participants’ Jewish identities but also suggests that alumni do not consistently translate their heightened interest in Jewish life into involvement with the Jewish community. If you are a Birthright alumnus, or just interested in Birthright, join this discussion of the Birthright experience and life after.
