Howard Gorin is rabbi of Tikvat Israel Congregation in Rockville, MD. He is actively involved with Jewish communities in sub-Saharan Africa. He led a Bet Din to Uganda in 2002, which oversaw the "conversion" of some 300 members of the Abayudaya Community. He has visited Nigeria three times and continues to provide leadership to the emerging community there. Gorin publishes a Torah newsletter, Shalom Africa, which is received by readers in seven African countries.

I am curious about the many facets of the "Who is a Jew?" question as applied to people of color. Were the original Israelites black? If so, how did Judaism become a predominantly white person's religion? How does one assess the claims of Jewish ancestry arising among Africans or among African Americans? We will explore these and other questions and take a look at some of the books that discuss these topics.
