Jewish Masculinity as Presented in the Works of Philip Roth

Identity & Responsibility

  • Friday 11:30AM–12:45PM Safari Backspace
Arguably one of the world's best Jewish authors, Philip Roth has been stirring up strong responses of love and hate on behalf of his male protagonists for decades. Specifically, Roth presents a canon of Jewish Masculinity (and maleness) that manages to both enrage and alienate, endear and allure. This session will begin with a presentation on Jewish Masculinity in the works of Philip Roth, and conclude with participant discussion. Mensches and Maidelahs of all genders welcome and encouraged.

Living Queer Jewish Lives

Identity & Responsibility

  • Friday 9:10PM–10:25PM Congressional Room 2
Often on the front lines of struggle but dismissed as on the fringes, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer and Questioning Jews have often had to choose between living a Jewish life and living a queer life. Let's come out and meet one another, tell our stories, and marvel at our truths.

You Go Girl!

Female Empowerment in the Jewish Community

  • Saturday 1:00PM–2:15PM Tower Board Room
In the past 25 years, Jewish women have transformed the Jewish community, bringing innovations in communal organizing, prayer, and ritual. At the same time, women still face challenges in achieving their desired level of participation and leadership in our community. What are the challenges women face today? What can we do to further empower Jewish women? Hear from our panelists, who are engaged in paving new roads for women in our community.

Our Hearts Grieve:

The Passing of Prop 8

Identity & Responsibility

  • Monday 11:15AM–12:30PM Empire Room 3 South
The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender movement has come a long way in America - and the United States government still denies us basic human rights. Proposition 8 let us know that many of our neighbors agree with our government. These are the facts. Beneath the facts, there is heartbreak. Beneath the heartbreak, there is the true damage: GLBTQ people live with the grief and loss of being discounted as full people every day. Here we will examine queer lives, rights, heartbreak and survival.
