Caryn Green is the founder of Crossroads, the first drop-in center for English-speaking at-risk teens in Israel. Since it was founded in Jerusalem in 2000, the center has grown exponentially and now serves teens all over Israel. A great speaker and storyteller, Caryn hopes to educate Limmud NY participants about this “not-talked-about” problem in Israel and also spotlight a Tzedakah/Tikkun Olam opportunity.

Teaching a Teen to Fish

Are we defined by our behavior?

  • Friday 10:10AM–11:25AM Embassy Room 2

Identity and Responsibility, Israel, Text and Thought, High School Recommended, University Student Recommended

When we break societal norms, are we eternally marked by the transgression? Many people give up on the young adults who exist on the fringes of Israeli society, banishing them without a second thought. If Judaism finds a place for the yetzer harah (evil inclination) in our theology, how can we turn our backs on these teens in our communities, even if their behavior is reprehensible? This session will discuss at risk behavior and the concept of giving hope back to disenfranchised youth.

Someone to Run With

for High School Students

  • Saturday 1:00PM–2:15PM Ski Chalet

High School Only

What does the underbelly of Jerusalem look like? We will explore David Grossman’s novel “Someone to Run With” and its depiction of homeless/substance abusing teens on the streets of Jerusalem. Who are these kids and how do they fall down so far? What does it mean to be a teen, like you, and to deal with life -- especially compared to how these teens dealt with theirs. Caryn Green will bring to light the truth about how teens at risk reach rock bottom, what this entails, and the challenges they face in society while attempting to find their way back.

Death, Drugs, and Violence

Jewish Responses

  • Sunday 2:55PM–4:10PM Empire Room 1

As a people with a history of strife and loss, Jews are used to talking about violence and loss in global or historical terms. But what about individual struggle? How do we deal with issues of drug abuse, homelessness and violence in our communities? Is there such a thing as a “Jewish response?”
